Examination
The purpose of the examination is to check whether the student has achieved the knowledge and skills set out in the syllabus. Here you will find everything you need to know about your exams.
The form of examination must be specified in the syllabus and the higher education institutions themselves decide which forms of examination to use. Common forms of examination are classroom writing, compulsory attendance, PM, paper, laboratory work, cross-group presentations, problem-solving examinations, take-home examinations, essays, internships, written group examinations, oral individual examinations, multiple examinations at different times, self and peer evaluation, oral group examinations, computer-based examinations and continuous examinations.
If supplements are to be used as a form of re-examination, this must be stated in the syllabus.
Times for examination
Examinations shall take place between 08.00 and 20.00 Monday through Saturday. Semester exams on instrument and degree concerts may be scheduled freely within the established academic year. Exchange students who only spend the fall semester at Luleå University of Technology shall be given the opportunity to be examined before the Christmas break.
Notification of results
The student shall be notified of the examination results no later than three weeks after the examination and no later than two weeks before the next re-examination. The examination assignment must state when the results will be announced.
Reporting in Ladok
Study results must be reported in the study documentation system Ladok no later than five working days after the correction of the examination is completed. The results from each sub-examination on a course, scored in the syllabus, must be registered in Ladok independently of each other.
Examination sessions for discontinued courses
Examination opportunities for discontinued courses shall be given to such an extent that the student has the opportunity to complete their studies. Re-examination shall be offered twice in the first year that the course is not given and then once a year for another two years.
Missing exam or other examination material
If an examination or other examination material has been lost and the university is at fault, the examiner shall ensure that the student is given the opportunity to take the examination again through a written or oral examination or other knowledge check. This shall be done as soon as possible after agreement with the student.
Double exam
The student has the opportunity to write two or more exams on the same day and at the same time. This provided that the exam registration is made both via My LTU and to the exam administration before the last day of registration has passed. The writing time is the time that the longest exam has.
Examination at another location
The student's ability to take an exam elsewhere is regulated by the Vice-Chancellor's decision. Examinations at another location may be allowed if there are strong reasons. Information and forms for the application, which must be made in writing, can be found on the university's student website.
Last examination before graduation
Students who only have one examination left before graduation may be given the opportunity to examine the course on a special occasion. Consideration shall be given to the university's financial and practical conditions for organizing such an examination at a time other than the regular examination time. To be entitled to this opportunity, all other courses, including the degree project, must be completed. A certificate showing that this is the case can be obtained from the study counsellor.
A request for an extra examination session must be submitted at least one month in advance to the course-giving department. The department decides on the date of the examination, where the opportunity, as far as possible, is placed on the dates decided in the examination periods at the university. The conditions shall be such that the examination session will maintain the same level of legal certainty as a regular examination session. A student who fails this extra examination session must wait until the next regular or re-examination session in the course is given.
Exam schedule
The date of the exam must be available at least ten working days before the last day of registration. No teacher-led teaching may take place during the examination periods.
Delivery of the written exam and comments on grading
The student has the right to request a review of the grading of the examination assignment. Studenttorget (Campus in Luleå) or an equivalent function on other campuses shall have clear and known procedures for handing out exams and handling comments on the marking of exams.
The university may not fail to mark exams, report exam results, refuse to issue diplomas or otherwise use its status as an authority to exert similar pressure in the event that a student liable for fees is unable to meet any financial obligations to the university.
Change of examiner
A student who has taken two examinations for a course or part of a course without passing has the right to have another examiner appointed unless there are special reasons for not doing so. Such a request is made to the head of the department responsible for the course. If the student is dissatisfied with the head of department's decision, the student may refer the matter to the Vice-Chancellor. The matter should, if possible, be dealt with before the next examination session.
Credit transfer
If a student has completed certain higher education courses with approved results, the student is entitled to credit this for higher education at another university. However, this does not apply if there is a significant difference between the courses. In those cases where a course or part of a course can be credited, a mark for credit transfer must be made in Ladok. The decision on credit transfer is made in accordance with the Vice-Chancellor's decision-making and delegation procedure.
Studies abroad
After studying abroad at a higher education institution where the university has arranged the study place with the support of an agreement, the student shall be credited with points corresponding to the student's documented performance. This is only in cases where the studies do not overlap with previous studies and have been completed at an academic level. After completing studies abroad, the student must apply for credit transfer on a specially designed form available on the university's website.
Students who intend to study abroad on their own, so-called free mover, must apply for a study break. The application for credit transfer is made on the above-mentioned form. In these cases, an individual assessment is made regarding credit transfer upon return. The University does not guarantee that these studies will be credited.
Approval of internships and placements
All departments that are responsible for programs where internships or clinical placements are included must establish specific guidelines for how the activity is to be conducted.
Degree certificate
It is the student's responsibility to apply for a degree certificate. Luleå University of Technology's application of the national and local degree regulations is decided in Guidelines for handling degree matters.
Handling of personal data
The student's personal data is processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The University processes personal data in and for the University's mission as an education provider and research institution. The University is responsible for ensuring that personal data is protected by appropriate technical and organizational measures. More information about the processing of students' personal data can be found on the student website.
