Syllabus
Legal status
Each course must have a syllabus. The syllabus is a legally binding regulation established by the university. The syllabus applies generally and both Luleå University of Technology staff, such as teaching and examining teachers on a course, and students are obliged to follow it.
Limitation of examinations
Any restrictions on examinations or internship periods must be clearly stated in the syllabus.
Transitional provisions
In connection with a decision to change the syllabus or close a course, a decision must also be made on transitional provisions.
Content of the syllabus
The syllabus shall state the following: the level of the course, the number of credits, objectives, specific entry requirements, the forms of assessment of student performance and other necessary regulations.
Course syllabi at Luleå University of Technology shall also state the following:
- the name of the course
- main content of the course and implementation
- the course's grading system
- the different parts of the course (components)
- whether the number of opportunities for exams and practical training or equivalent is limited
- when the syllabus or revision of the syllabus comes into force and transitional provisions
- list of literature
- examiner for the course
- the possibility of an adapted or alternative form of examination, if necessary, when there is a decision on special educational support.
Overlapping courses
Overlapping courses shall not be included in the degree. The syllabus must clearly state when two courses have essentially the same content, i.e. overlapping courses. In case of uncertainty regarding the content of similar courses, the student should contact the examiner concerned.
Determination of course syllabus
The head of department decides on the determination of the syllabus. The head of department can delegate the right of decision to the head of education.
Syllabi for stand-alone courses and syllabi for programs should be established and available to students no later than the day the stand-alone course or program opens for registration. Changes regarding course content and course literature for courses within programs may be allowed if there is a need to revise the course for quality reasons. Such revisions must be made no later than eight weeks before the start of the course. In cases where changes to courses within a program become relevant, changes to regulations regarding eligibility and selection may also need to be established. Revisions of the syllabus regulations may need to be established and made available to students in good time, meaning earlier than eight weeks before the start of the course. The question of good time may be decided on a case-by-case basis.
Course literature
The syllabus shall contain compulsory course literature and any reference literature. If less than half of a textbook is used in the course, this must be stated in the bibliography. All course literature shall be available in the university library, electronically or in paper form.
A complete bibliography shall be available no later than ten weeks before the start of the course, to give students the opportunity to obtain the literature for the first course session. After the start of the course, changes to the course literature may only be made after consultation with the course participants. Exceptions can be made for repertoire lists in artistic programs.
Course literature in case of disability
It is the student's responsibility to notify the examiner in good time if any disability exists that causes reading and writing difficulties. The examiner must take into account that it may take eight weeks to have the course literature read in for those students who, due to disability, are in need of literature in other media and take the necessary measures for this reason.
