International consortium develops the batteries of the future
Luleå University of Technology will be part of an international consortium for the development of next-generation energy storage units. These are so-called supercapacitors, batteries with high energy density and a long lifespan.
"We will also work to reduce the need for the critical and rare metals used in today's batteries," says Faiz Ullah Shah, researcher in the field of interfacial chemistry at Luleå University of Technology.
Batteries will play a decisive role in the green transition, especially in the transport sector and for stationary energy storage. The project consortium consists of three research and technology organisations, two universities and three leading companies in the vehicle energy and workshop sectors from Portugal, Poland, Italy, Ukraine, Belgium and Sweden.
"Our main responsibility at Luleå University of Technology is to develop novel fluorine-free ionic liquid based electrolytes that are not only thermally and electrochemically stable but also compatible with the new electrode materials of next-generation energy storage devices," says Faiz Ullah Shah.
Facts
The project consortium is financed by EU funds from Horizon of approximately SEK 60 million, Luleå University of Technology receiving approximately SEK 7 million.
