Mathematics and Science Education
Mathematics and Science Education is a research subject that studies teaching and learning in mathematics and science-related subjects at different levels within the educational system. Research in the subject establishes a scientific foundation for developing and enhancing instruction in these subjects by investigating the processes of learning and teaching in these subjects, how the specific subject content is communicated in various contexts, as well as how individuals and groups across different educational levels develop and utilize knowledge. A particular focus is put on students' motivation, skills, and attitudes toward the subject area, as well as the development of teaching methods in modern learning environments.
Our research
We conduct research in several areas, including:
- Pupils' and student teachers' knowledge development in and motivation for mathematics.
- Problems regarding the transition from upper secondary school to university.
- Learning and learning materials in digital environments.
- Learning for sustainable development.
Among our partners are several universities in Sweden, Norway, and Finland as well as several research subjects at Luleå University of Technology.
Our education
The research subject Mathematics and Science Education is tightly connected to teacher training and education. We are involved in all teacher education programmes at Luleå University of Technology. We conduct postgraduate education in connection with PROFS – The Graduate School Practice-based Educational Research.

Broader approach and cutting edge research
Change of name for the research subject means a broader approach. But the cutting edge research on learning difficulties in mathematics within higher education continues.
