Nursing
Nursing is about actions aimed at understanding and meeting a person's needs while also utilising their resources to maintain or improve their health. It involves the prevention and alleviation of illness and disease, as well as the importance of relationships and the environment on health. Nursing research delves into ethics, concepts, phenomena, and theories essential for quality care. Additionally, it aims to highlight vulnerable groups and identify the conditions necessary for sustainable, equitable, and gender-equal healthcare.
The central concepts of nursing science are the person, health, environment, and nursing actions. Nursing aims to help and support an individual and their relatives in daily life to improve health, prevent ill health and disease, and restore and maintain health. Nursing also aims to promote healing and well-being in the person, facilitate a life with chronic illness, disability, and suffering, and provide the opportunity for a dignified death.
At Luleå University of Technology, nursing research is conducted within three focus areas: Experiencing acute illness or injury, Recovery-oriented psychiatric care, and Promoting health and learning throughout life. The research is funded by external grants from, for example, Forte, Interreg Aurora, The Kamprad Family Foundation, The Swedish Research Council, and Horizon Europe, as well as internal strategic funding.
The research questions we address are important for, and integrated into, the education we provide. Likewise, the courses we offer influence the research we conduct. Doctoral education in nursing is offered, with PhD projects aligned with the three focus areas. PhD students in nursing are part of the larger doctoral environment "The Academy for Health of the Future," with some also participating in research schools.
