Design of selective collectors for the separation of valuable minerals from mining waste
Formas is funding a new project for the project "Design of selective collectors for the separation of valuable mineral from mining waste". Anna-Carin Larsson and Anuttam Patra at Chemistry of Interfaces at Luleå University of Technology, was awarded three million SEK.
"This can be done due to the strong interaction that occurs between the mineral surface and the collector when geometric matching occurs between the metal distance in the mineral and the distance between the binding groups on the collector", says Anna-Carin Larsson, Associate Professor in Chemistry of Interfaces at Luleå University of Tecchnology.
The application has been made possible thanks to a high-risk project from CAMM 2 where cooperation was initiated to combine geology (mineralogical characterization) with chemistry (synthesis and surface chemistry) to develop and manufacture environmentally friendly collectors specially designed to fit a specific mineral.
Co-applicant is Anuttam Patra from the same research group as well as Christina Wanhainen from ore geology.
