Solid-State NMR, Paramagnetic NMR and ab-initio Calculations on Rare Earth Metal Complexes
In collaboration with the Department of Physics at Oulu University, two PhD students will investigate structure-property relationships for different REE (rare earth elements) ligand systems, with a combination of molecular scale experimental and ab-initio computational methods.
The students will spend half of the time at LTU and half of the time at OU, and will be awarded a double-degree in Physics (Finland) and Chemistry (Sweden). One of the students will investigate paramagnetic REE complexes in solution. She will synthesize different REE carboxylate complexes and investigate their interaction with different solvents. The other student will investigate REEPO4 minerals in detail. She will use xenon NMR to investigate the porous structure and also to enhance signals from ligands attached on the mineral surfaces.
