Almost all Swedish rivers are today integrated into a large-scale hydroelectric production system. This is a consequence of extensive hydropower development during the 20th century. This project focuses on different perspectives of the effects of Swedish hydropower development. Through two case studies – Akkats and Laholm hydropower facilities, how different sources have presented and different people’s perspectives on hydropower development effects in the local community in two different parts of the country post-hydropower development is investigated. In the arctic part of Sweden, hydropower development was more large-scale and extensive, and this is also land of indigenous populations such as Sámi. By comparing an arctic example (Akkats) with southern Swedish example (Laholm), the purpose is also to highlight how regional differences can impact the perspectives on hydropower development effects.
