Iron in the North
Since 2016, Luleå University of Technology and the Museum of Norrbotten have been running the interdisciplinary research project Iron in the North with the aim of clarifying the early introduction of iron processing in northern Scandinavia based on the role of hunting and trapping communities in the process.
Since 2016, Luleå University of Technology and Norrbotten Museum have been conducting the interdisciplinary research project Järn i Norr (Iron in the north). The purpose is to clarify the early introduction of iron processing in northern Scandinavia based on the role of hunter- gatherer communities in the process. An important part of the project is to continuously communicate the research results with the public. Through innovative research communication, we have mixed traditional communication methods with theater and school activities. In 2019, we conducted an iron production experiment in the village of Vivungi outside of Kiruna. The experiment was carried out in close collaboration with the local population and was based on a reconstruction of a 2000-year-old iron production site that was investigated.
