Grant for International Mobility with La Trobe University, Melbourne
The LTU2 (read “LTU-squared”) project builds upon successful results of the initial
collaboration between the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space engineering at
Luleå University of Technology, Sweden (LTU-S) and the Research Centre for Data Analytics and
Cognition at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia (LTU-A).
The project focuses on the following research objectives: 1. Develop novel methods for
representation of complex data structures for self-structuring artificial intelligence techniques that
generate effective machine learning outcomes; 2.) To solve data analytics challenges in
applications with high societal impact; 3.) To develop novel computing principles for edge AI, that
is to enable low-energy and fast machine learning operations on low-power end devices; 4.)
Establish international research group with expertise in the cutting-edge theories and
methodologies of artificial intelligence, ranging across energy-efficient learning, incremental deep
learning, generalized information fusion and advanced predictive modelling.
The project also defines objectives related to higher education: 1.) To influence the content of the
master level courses on data analytics with the novel research outcomes on self-structured AI in
socially critical applications, which is prospected to substantially broaden the range of business
cases, accessible for students’ learning; 2.) To leverage expertise and experience acquired from
the successful Master of Business Analytics program delivered by the Research Centre for Data
Analytics and Cognition at La Trobe University, for curriculum development in the new Master of
Data Science at Luleå University of Technology (starting 2020); 3.)
To jointly supervise Master projects in both programmes providing the opportunity for student mobility and international exposure; 4.) To further execute the developed roadmap for establishing double degree
programmes (MSc and PhD) between LTU-S and LTU-A.
