Impact of supraharmonics on cable terminations
The goal of this project is to collect and map (summarize) knowledge about overtones in relation to troubleshooting and preventive maintenance at cable terminations and joints.
Failure of cable terminations is a major contribution to the number of supply interruptions due to cables. There are a number of reasons for cable failure. Faults on cables in general are often due to mechanical damage for example due to digging. Faults on cable terminations or cable joints are more often due to insulation failure, where high frequency distortion in voltage can be a contributing cause. There are strong indications that high levels of voltage distortion in the kHz range (supraharmonics) lead to rapid cable termination failures. Being able to reduce the number of faults in cable terminations or cable joints is thus highly relevant for the network operators.
