Map the risks and quantify how DC components impact residual circuit breaker operation
The project will map the risks and quantify how DC components (including frequencies well below 50 Hz, quasi-DC components) can lead to a situation where a residual circuit breaker does not operate when needed.
DC components occur, among others, at PV installations and with electric vehicle charging. A DC component can cause some types of residual circuit breakers to no longer operate when needed and thus no longer protect against touch voltage. A quantitative assessment of the risks will be carried out for the aforementioned and other types of installations. It will also be assessed whether the DC component can lead to inactivation of residual circuit breakers in nearby plants as well. The project will map the risks through simulations, measurements and laboratory experiments.
