BioKolMet
Background
- Future demand of biocarbon by Swedish steel industries is 100-150 000 ton/year (ref: climate action plans). Estimated biocarbon production in Sweden is currently ca. 1000 ton/year for BBQ (different quality of biocarbon).
- In previous R&D projects, an innovative bio-carbon production process was scaled up from one biomass particle to 100kg/day). Both fundamental and applied knowledge is needed for a further scale-up to 30-50 000 ton/year production.
Objectives
To ensure the development of energy efficient conversion processes to produce high-quality biocarbon. Specific goals of the project by LTU are:
- Detailed quantification of mass and energy balance.
- Evaluation of the bio-oil characteristics and exploration of their use as highvalue applications.
- Suggest an optimal biocarbon production process through detailed comparison of laboratory scale and demonstration scale reactors.
