Courses on English and Education
English is spoken all over the world. More than 400 million people have English as their first language and many more use it as their second language.Good English skills are essential tools for global communication and open up the world. Many workplaces today require advanced verbal and written communication skills in English, thorough knowledge of English-speaking cultures and social structures, as well as critical and analytical skills in English.
Bachelor courses
Develop your English
English studies at LTU improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and provide a good foundation for further studies. Our courses also give you insights into the structure of the English language, the history of English, as well as English-speaking cultures and literatures. You will also improve your ability to analyze linguistic, literary and cultural aspects of the language.
LTU offers three bachelor’s degree courses, which can be studied independently. Many of our students are teachers, or student teachers, and the courses can be part of a teaching degree. All courses are online courses and do not require campus presence for seminars or exams. The teaching is online, in the form of live daytime seminars, and through oral and written hand-in assignments.
The courses
English 1 (course code E0024S) is a basic course at university level. It is not a beginner's course, but for students who have already studied English B/English 6 in upper secondary school, or equivalent. It provides basic and broad knowledge of English and is an excellent course to supplement other studies. English 1 is given full-time during the fall semester.
English 2 (course code E0025S) s a more advanced course. It requires completion of English 1 and is for students who want to become very good at English and learn more about the English language and about literature in English. English 2 runs full-time during the spring.
English 3: Linguistics and Literature (course code E0026S) is a Bachelor's course, i.e. a course that can be included as a main subject in a Bachelor's degree. This course is more academic than the first two courses and requires a good knowledge of English. To take the course you need to have studied English 2. The course English 3: Linguistics and Literature comprises 15 credits and is given at half time during the autumn semester.
English 3: Bachelor thesis (course code E0027S) is also a bachelor course. In this course you write a thesis with a specialization in English language linguistics or English language literature. To take the course you need to have studied English 3: Linguistics and Literature or completed English studies corresponding to 1-75 credits. The course English 3: Bachelor thesis comprises 15 credits and is given at during the spring semester.
English 4: Introduction to English and Education (course code E7003S) In this course, you will encounter the research field known as English and education. During this course, you delve deeper into both second language acquisition and how it takes place, as well as English teaching in the Swedish school context.
Career prospects
English skills are necessary in many different areas and situations, both within and outside Sweden. To have studied English at university gives you a career advantage. A good command of English is necessary for higher studies and for most professions. Many students with a bachelor’s degree in English study to become teachers or librarians. English skills are needed in areas such as communication, journalism, medicine and law. English is also needed for those working in administration, tourism and trade, among other areas.
Other courses
English and Education at Luleå University of Technology offers a number of stand-alone courses in addition to our BA level courses.
Each of the courses below corresponds to 7.5 credits and, in order to apply, you need to have documented skills in English 6 or equivalent qualifications.
English for Professional Purposes
On the course English for Professional Purposes (course code E0009S), you have the opportunity to practise your oral and written proficiency, focusing particularly on English for the workplace. The primary aim of the course is to develop your overall communicative skills in formal English. This includes, for example, writing CVs and cover letters, participating in a simulated job interview and giving oral presentations. In other words, the course offers exercises and assignments that are useful in preparation for a globalised working life where English is frequently used.
Creative Writing in English
The course Creative Writing in English (course code E0023S) offers an introduction to writing fiction while also aiming to develop your overall English skills. Throughout the course, you focus mainly on writing short fiction, such as poetry and short stories. You are asked to share your drafts during workshops, thus providing and receiving constructive feedback in smaller groups. After having completed the course, you will have received various tools for analysing your own and other writers’ texts and for using English creatively in speech and writing.
Spoken and Written English for Exchange Students
Spoken and Written English for Exchange Students 1 (course code E0019S) assists you in developing your overall proficiency in English. The lessons are communicative and you are expected to cooperate with your classmates in pairs or smaller groups. Part of the course content is to give oral presentations on well-known subjects, such as student life and travel. In addition, you practise your use of written English, thus expanding your knowledge of register (formal/informal English), grammar and vocabulary, among other things. While the main focus is on oral and writing skills, exercises related to reading and listening comprehension may be included.
Trends in Recent Young Adult Fiction in English
This is a course for anyone with an interest in young adult (YA) fiction, who wishes to know more about recent trends within the genre. In this course, you will become familiar with new works from a range of subgenres, such as dystopias, fantasy, romance and coming-of-age stories. You will also develop insights into how topics such as social justice, climate change and identity are addressed in and through YA fiction. Finally, we will delve into the concept of young adulthood and how it is portrayed in recent examples of the genre.
English within the teacher education programmes
English and Education offers several courses within the teacher education programmes at Luleå University of Technology.
Primary school teacher education programmes
In the primary school teacher education programmes, you can choose to target one of the following age groups: preschool–year 3 (pupils aged 6–9) or years 4–6 (pupils aged 10–12). During your studies, you meet our teachers on two English courses corresponding to a total of 30 credits. Among other things, the courses include English language didactics as well as literature and culture studies. Moreover, one of the objectives is to develop your own English skills in speech and writing. The courses are primarily taught online, but there are also a number of campus weeks in both courses, which students usually appreciate as they provide the opportunity to put theory into practice in collaboration with classmates.
High school teacher education programme
The high school teacher education programme is a campus-based programme that prepares you for teaching English not only in high school but also in years 7–9 (pupils aged 13–15) and adult education. While studying in this programme, you take five English courses corresponding to a total of 90 credits. The programme helps you develop a profound knowledge of English as well as didactic skills. In addition to modules related to English language didactics and assessment, the subject of English is studied with a focus on linguistics and literature. On the fifth and final course, you individually write a subject-didactic essay of 15 credits.

Doctoral studies
It is possible to study for a PhD in English and Education at Luleå University of Technology.
PhD positions offered within the subject are five-year contracts, which comprise four years of third-cycle studies and one year of departmental duties, for example, teaching. PhD studies within the subject include 60–70 credits of course work and another 170–180 credits of thesis work. The dissertation normally takes the form of a compilation thesis of articles and the work is supervised by at least two experienced researchers, who meet the doctoral students individually on a regular basis throughout their studies. Work in progress is also presented at research seminars open to other members of the research community.
Positions are announced
Doctoral students can only be hired by the university when positions are opened for competitive application. These positions are announced on LTU’s list of vacancies. Applicants are expected to have completed their MA degree with distinction. Applications require a full research plan and a sample of the applicant’s academic writing (for instance, a degree essay).
Third-cycle courses
At Luleå University of Technology, a number of general third-cycle courses are available to all doctoral students. English and Education is responsible for Structures in academic English (course code FOR048F), which is a very popular course of 7.5 credits.
