A living lab is an approach to manage open innovation processes in which quadruple helix stakeholders including citizens (and in some cases quintuple helix including natural environment) are involved to co-create innovative solutions in real life everyday use context.

Living Lab Key Principles

1. Early (and continuous) engagement of all relevant stakeholders and users (Quadruple helix, i.e., public sector, private sector, research institutions and users/citizens)
2. Value co-creation for all stakeholders
3. Openness and transparency
4. Iterative process (be inclusive to receive and apply feedback in all phases)
5. Real life experimentation and evaluation
6. Distribute the power of decision making between all stakeholders and users
7. Identify the stakeholders’ needs, motivations and expectations to be socially inclusive

Responsible Living Lab Framework

An overarching framework for conducting Digital Transformation processes within Living Labss while adhering to Responsible Reseach and Innovation principles. It emphasizes openness and transparency, meaningful stakeholder engagement, ethical considerations, and sustainability throughout all stages of Living Lab activities and actions. Responsible Living Labs aim to ensure that Digital Transformation processes align with ethical values and societal well-being, fostering inclusivity, responsible resource use, and the protection of human rights.

Living Lab Key Components

• Governance models including management structure, politics, and policies
• Financing and business models
• A physical representation that takes place in a real-life setting
• An innovation to experiment with
• Partners and end users, including citizens, public and private actors, and academic institutions (i.e., a quadruple helix)
• Approaches for engaging different stakeholders and collecting data
• ICT and infrastructure such as IoT devices, sensors, and tools

Urban Living Lab

An urban living lab is a local place for innovative solutions that aims to solve urban challenges and contribute to long-term sustainability by actively and openly co-constructing solutions with citizens and other stakeholders.

Rural Living Lab

A rural living lab is a local innovation pilot that aims to solve rural challenges and contribute to inclusive digital transformation of society by engaging quintuple helix actors including rural residents and natural environments in real-life digitalization experiments.
