GEMM
GEMM (Gesture, Embodiment and Machines in Music) is a research cluster within LTU ARC. GEMM was established in 2018 and is led by Professor Stefan Östersjö. The research cluster does cross-disciplinary research on interactivity in musical creation in collaboration with research centers in Europe and the USA.
GEMM conducts basic research in music performance through the development of methods for multimodal data collection and analysis. At the same time, applied research is also an important perspective, and here the collaboration with professional actors in music life is a central factor. GEMM aims to drive development in the performing arts, regionally, nationally and internationally. With Studio Acusticum and its hyperorgan and Norrbottensteatern as partners, new artistic projects, compositions and technological tools are created that explore and develop the role of music and performing arts in society.
GEMM consists of four professors, Stefan Östersjö, Åsa Unander-Scharin, Jan Berg and Nyssim Lefford, a visiting professor, Tero Nauha, from the University of Helsinki, the senior researchers Ulf Friberg and Federico Visi, as well as a postdoctoral fellow and six doctoral students.
Within GEMM, a quartet has been formed that explores remote control of hyperorgans in telematic performance. The TCP/Indeterminate Place Quartet is the central building block of an ongoing research project supported by the Swedish Research Council. TCP/IP Quartet is also part of the creation of Zosimos, a telematic opera composed by Professor Jostein Stalheim. This project is funded by HK-dir (NO) and involves partners in Bergen, Berlin and Cairo.
