Stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag-(Cu)
Conceptual Modelling and Exploration Criteria for Stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag-(Cu) Deposits in Bergslagen, Sweden
This project will develop exploration criteria for stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag-(Cu) deposits in Bergslagen; specifically, the most effective stratigraphic, structural, mineralogical and geochemical vectors to mineralization.
A second aim is to re-assess the origin of stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag-(Cu) deposits in Bergslagen using innovative geological and geochemical methods and taking into account recent research in major stratiform base metal provinces elsewhere in the world.
The project will involve extensive geological logging and sampling of drill cores at Zinkgruvan and other stratiform deposits in Bergslagen, followed by geochemical analysis (major oxides, trace elements, rare earth elements, stable isotopes), geological interpretation and conceptual 3D modelling.
The results will enable mineral exploration companies to more effectively interpret vectors towards mineralization in ongoing mining operations, and in regional exploration for new stratiform deposits. It will allow evaluation as to whether isolated, small, sub-economic stratiform deposits known at surface have the potential of grading into economic mineralization at depth, i.e. whether they comprise distal or medial facies of stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag-(Cu) deposits like Zinkgruvan.
The results will lay the foundation for discovery of new ore lenses and new deposits, which will help to provide an attractive future for regional mining communities in Bergslagen and elsewhere.
The project is financed by the Swedish mining industry (Boliden Mineral AB, Zinkgruvan Mining AB and Lovisagruvan Mining AB) and the Swedish state (VINNOVA
