Optimized planning of railway maintenance
In a new project, we will study if railway maintenance can be improved by improving planning and coordination.
The project team consists of Bjarne Bergquist, Murat Kulahci, Erik Vanhatalo and Peter Söderholm from the Quality Technology group and Athanasia Karakitsiou from Industrial Logistics.
We hope to improve planning by combining modern, statistically based data analysis of the railway’s maintenance needs, with models that describe the costs and risks of different types of maintenance actions. We then optimized according to different scenarios, such as the risk of operations shut-down will be longer than anticipated, minimizing the cost or combinations of different criteria.
Luleå University collaborating on this project with the Swedish Transport Administration and the data management company eMaintenance365. The project is funded by Vinnova (the Swedish Innovation Agency) and Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration), each sponsoring the project with 1.5 million crowns and by eMaintenance365 with 152 thousand crowns. The project will run for three years and started December 1, 2016.
