Application of GIS to estimate the sediment load in Mosul dam reservoir
Mosul Dam is one of biggest dams on Tigris River in Iraq, which is located in northern part of Iraq, about 60km north of Mosul city.
Mosul Dam is one of biggest dams on Tigris River in Iraq, which is located in northern part of Iraq, about 60km north of Mosul city. The dam is a multipurpose project, to provide storage of water for irrigation, hydropower generation, and flood control. The problem of sedimentation is one of the important factors in the reservoirs design and operation, which effect the operation of the dams such as pumping station, hydropower plants, and bottom outlets, and also affects the economic life of the dam. In this reservoir one of the actual problems is sediment accumulation near the pumping station of Al-Jazera irrigation project which affect the operation schedule and pumping rate.
The objective of this research is to estimate the sediment load (based on mathematical models) that enters the Mosul dam reservoirs from Tigris river in addition to some valleys from the east and west side of the reservoir as shown if the figure below. Then another model is to be applied for routing sediment within the reservoir to estimate the amount and distribution of sediment within the reservoir. The ultimate goal is the evaluation of the effect of the sedimentation within the reservoir and finding best possible solutions to minimize the effect of sedimentation within the reservoir so that the operational life of the reservoir is increased.
