About Solid Mechanics
The subject deals with the study and mathematically describe the mechanisms for the materials and components, deformation and fracture under load. The methodology adopted is analytical, experimental and numerical.
The research in solid mechanics is mainly oriented towards the areas of material modeling, nonlinear dynamics and fracture mechanics. The applications come from the industrial product that includes both modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes such as analysis of product function. One example is the analysis of thermo-mechanical forming of ultra high strength components for the automotive industry. Has studied the properties of materials at hardening the material is cooled from about 900 degrees Celsius to room temperature for about 10 seconds. In another context, studied the material properties of materials subjected to high strain rates.
The research covers a large extent the development of computer-based analytical methods that are implemented in modern finite element program for nonlinear analysis. Some projects are also being developed inverse methods that combine experimental, numerical analysis and optimization. The research ranges from the material properties at the micro level to the systems and components function in industrial applications.
