Use of CT scanning to classify the sawability of wood
Can CT scanners identify wood material properties that affect the mechanical aspects of wood machining? Characterization, modelling and classification of logs and tree trunks with respect to machinability is an unexplored area for CT scanning. The aim is to build models of material properties at the log or tree level using CT data to be able to choose which process parameters the individual log should be sawn with, to optimize the outcome (strength, appearance, surface structure, value, process stability, etc.). This initial project is a one-year start to provide proposals for a continued project plan to characterize and classify wood with regard to machinability. It has the character of basic studies that can form the basis for a number of other more applied projects.
