Min – North
Development, Evaluation and Optimization of Measures to Reduce the Impact on the Environment from Mining Activities in Northern Regions.
Common issues regarding the mining environment have been identified in Finland, Sweden and Norway, although ore types and mining methods are different. Cross-border cooperation is strategically to create a larger critical mass of researchers and also to develop SME in the region that can implement methods, products and service. Min-North is financed by the EU program Interreg Nord and coordinated by LTU. MIN-NORTH is a trans-national cooperation between universities and research institutions with expertise within mine waste management, mine water treatment and in applied geophysics and geochemistry. The overall goal is to reduce the environmental impacts of mining in the northern regions by developing, evaluating, optimizing environmental techniques. Four organizations are participating in the project; Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), University of Oulu (UO), The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) and Luleå University of technology (LTU), and local SME and mining companies in the region. The project will run for 36 months with start 1st of January 2016. The different research projects are described in four work packages.
