Literacy: Successful practices and teaching methods to promote students' reading engagement and literacy.
How can teachers promote students' reading engagement and literacy? Researchers in education want to find out in close collaboration with teachers in Piteå municipality. The Läskraft project has been awarded a grant from the School Research Institute totaling SEK 4.5 million over three years.
The purpose of Läskraft is to use action research to identify successful approaches and teaching methods to strengthen students' engagement in fiction reading and promote reading competence in Swedish and Swedish as a second language in primary and secondary schools.
- Strengthening students' reading engagement and literacy is of great importance for students' learning now and in the future, but also for the educational and social system as a whole. Ultimately, it is a democracy issue, as good reading skills are required to participate in the democratic conversation, says Ulrika Bergmark, professor at Luleå University of Technology and project manager for Läskraft.
Based on challenges in teaching
The project is designed in collaboration between teachers and researchers in a network and is based on challenges that teachers have identified in teaching. A total of 15 teachers from Piteå municipality will participate in the project, divided into three action research groups: F-3, 4-9 and high school. Within the groups, the teachers work to identify and test successful approaches and teaching methods to strengthen students' reading engagement and reading competence. 15 classes are participating, which means a total of about 375 students.
The researchers collect data within the action research groups, including written reflections from students and teachers, focus group discussions and student-produced material.
The data is analyzed in collaboration between researchers and teachers.
- We hope that we will see the results of teachers being involved in driving the development of practice-based research, together with students. This is a collaborative project between universities and schools where teachers make an important contribution together with researchers," says Ulrika Bergmark.
