GEMM

GEMM (Gesture, Embodiment and Machines in Music) was founded in 2018 and is led by Professor Stefan Östersjö. The research cluster conducts interdisciplinary research on interactivity in musical creation in collaboration with research centers in Europe and the USA.

GEMM conducts basic research in musical design through the development of methods for multimodal data collection and analysis. At the same time, the applied research is important, and here the collaboration with professional actors in the music life is a central factor. GEMM aims to drive development in the music scene, regionally, nationally and internationally. With Norrbotten NEO, Gestrument and Studio Acusticum as partners, new artistic projects, compositions and technological tools are created that carry the music further in society.

The research cluster has a core of two professors, Stefan Östersjö together with Åsa Unander-Scharin, two postdoctoral researchers, Federico Visi and Rodrigo Schramm, and doctoral students Mattias Petersson, Robert Ek and Jesper Nordin. Nordin is a composer, but also the creator of the interactive technology Gestrument, a Swedish company that also co-finances Nordin's doctoral studies. Robert Ek is a clarinetist in Norrbotten NEO and is a doctoral student in collaboration with Norrbotten Music and LTU. Both Gestrument, Norrbotten NEO and Studio Acusticum are important parties in GEMM. Also important is the collaboration with Professor Ulrik Röijezon at the Department of Health Sciences, who has participated in several sub-studies of gestures in musical performance.
