Dialogica - an interactive conversation application in a computer game environment
Dialogica is an application that is developed to help people with speech difficulties to express themselves in in-depth conversations via graphic avatars.
In Dialogica, users can chat, have messages read out (text-to-speech), have messages translated into their own language, move "themselves" via animations, choose which avatar should represent "me", change world where the conversation is taking place and more.
Dialogica is developed on the basis of contemporary research in computer game technology and in philosophical conversations. The pedagogical functionality is based on theories and methods of effective and high-quality conversation participation and conversation leadership within the pedagogical method that is often called "philosophical conversations", and from argumentation theory.
The application is developed in the computer game engine Unity and by using it, the application can be made more similar to a computer game even if game mechanisms are not used (right now).
The application is developed primarily for iPads (newer ones due to demanding graphics) and can also be used on newer phones.
Dialogica will be tested with users with Afasi during the winter of 20/21.
See also the work that is going on with the application WalkAbout which is an application that is developed in parallel with Dialogica where the user can instead move in a 3D environment.
