Autonomous cable tunnel inspection
This project aims to develop a better understanding and to increase the knowledge around the concept of a “complete” solution to enable autonomous operation of autonomous robotic platforms in large-scale underground tunnelling environments. The envisioned operations include exploration of either known or unknown areas, onboard sensor data collection and mapping. Generally, underground tunnel areas pose serious challenges for robot deployment and operation, including dusty places, narrow areas, darkness and textureless surfaces that degrade the sensor and algorithm performance. Reaching the described tasks this proposal aims to address critical challenges related to
- high level autonomy,
- localization
- planning,
- perception,
- hardware and
- communication infrastructure.
The envisioned technology can have various benefits, providing cutting edge solutions for problems for the industry. The deployment of drones will result in increased safety and productivity and minimizing service and inspection procedures, while minimizing down-times.
