Undeclared sources (2016-2022)
In the project "Undeclared sources: Identification and characterisation of diffuse pollution from urban stormwater", we investigate pollutants that can be found in stormwater and where they originate.
Densification of urban areas risks increasing the pollutant loads to lakes and watercourses in the urban environment and surroundings. The overall aim with this project is to obtain knowledge about the contribution of organic and inorganic micro-pollutants from diffuse sources in the urban environment to stormwater, and identify potential risks based on element speciation to be able to make informed decisions when planning and building urban structures and BMP treatment facilities.
The project is divided into four parts:
- Screening several building materials and structures used in the built environment in order to identify specific sources and their associated pollutants that contribute to deterioration of the stormwater quality.
- Quantify the release of organic and inorganic substances from selected roofs, facades and other surfaces; under controlled conditions as well as in the field.
- Identify potential risks of pollutants in runoff based on element speciation, and point out appropriate treatment systems for the inorganic micro-pollutants due to their fractionation characteristics.
- Model how the release of substances may affect the stormwater quality at present and in the future.
The project is financed by the Swedish research council Formas by 10 milj SEK. The environmental department of City of Stockholm as well as NCC are also participating in the project.
