Bio4Energy Free Strategic Project, 2019-2020
Carbonization of biomass to high-quality renewable carbon materials for CO2 capturing and energy storage
The purpose of this project is to develop new biobased carbon materials with high graphitic carbon content using hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis. This biocarbon will be exfoliated to nanosized graphite layers and/or graphene layers with very large surface area, which can be potentially used for capturing CO2 and energy storage application.
Objectives:
- Better understand the consequence of the hydrothermal carbonization process on the carbon structure. Screen the functionality of different catalysts for improving the carbon nanostructure for exfoliation (expanding the graphite layers).
- Increase our knowledge on chemical/mechanical exfoliation process of carbon nanomaterials, few layers graphene and expanded graphite.
- Prepare highly porous nanocellulose-based adsorbents modified with high surface area bioderived carbon nanomaterials, and evaluate their CO2 adsorption properties and selectivities.
- Prepare highly porous lignin-based aerogels modified with bio-derived carbon nanomaterials, and evaluate their structure and electrochemical properties.
The project is carried out as a collaboration between three different platforms in Bio4Energy, including Biopolymers and Biochemicals (Prof. Kristiina Oksman, Dr. Shiyu Geng, Materials Science, LTU), Chemical Catalysis and Separation (Assoc. Prof. Liang Yu, Chemical Technology, LTU), and Thermochemical Conversation Technology (Prof. Kentaro Umeki, Energy Engineering, LTU; Dr. Roger Molinder, ETC RISE).
