CT lab
The computed tomography (CT) laboratory has a medical Siemens Somatom Emotion Duo Computed Tomography scanner (Siemens, Munich, Germany) and, financed by the CT WOOD program, an industrial Microtec Mito Computed Tomography scanner (Microtec, Venice, Italy). These scanners enable the nondestructive analysis of wood with a spatial resolution up to 0.3 x 0.3 x 0.3 mm3. The scanners can be connected to a custom-made drying kiln that allows the study of the effects of industrial drying and thermal modification up to 250°C on wood and sawn timber. A custom-made climate chamber is also available and can be combined with the scanners for processes involving temperatures from -70 to +50 °C and relative humidity level from 0 to 100%. The competence areas of the team of researchers working with the CT lab allow for the assessment of wood using advance image processing techniques, CT-based modelling and digital image correlation, from an anatomical level to the estimation of mechanical behaviour and properties such as moisture content, density and distortion.
