Mattias Lindahl, new visiting professor at Luleå University of Technology.
"A better world is my driving force"
Mattias Lindahl, professor of product-related environmental work at Linköping University, is one of Sweden's foremost researchers in circular and sustainable economy. Since the fall of 2023, he is also a visiting professor in the subject of Engineering Materials at Luleå University of Technology.
- It feels really fun and inspiring to become part of Luleå University of Technology. The research here complements the research conducted in Linköping in a very good way and I look forward to learning more about the business and of course also hope to contribute with both new insights and perspectives, says Mattias Lindahl who believes that the guest professorship will benefit both universities.
Strengthening each other
- Universities in Sweden should not compete with each other; our competitors are outside the country's borders. We can't afford to build empires at each university, but should cooperate and strengthen each other in the best possible way. This is also one of the main reasons why I came here.
Mattias Lindahl teaches and researches how to develop more circular and sustainable solutions, which includes the design of its products, services and systems, as well as the legal, environmental and economic aspects of these solutions. This is a field of research that is becoming increasingly important with the transition efforts taking place around the world. Today, he is considered one of Sweden's foremost authorities in the field and is, among many other things, a representative in the government's circular economy delegation. One of his main motivations is to leave a better world for the citizens of the future.
Doing good for humanity
- Circular economy is about creating value despite the reduced use of resources, thus reducing our climate impact. If we use our resources in a better and more efficient way, the world will be a slightly better place to live and that is my main motivation; I want to be able to look back on my work and feel that I have done something good for humanity.
Northern Sweden is at the beginning of a green transition of historic proportions, a fact that makes Luleå University of Technology interesting for Mattias. Not least because the transition to a sustainable industry provides opportunities for new thinking.
- It is not just about producing fossil-free steel or increasing the use of hydrogen, but being able to create a sustainable system and longer life cycles for what we produce. It is also economically beneficial for companies. It feels great to be in the center of events.
During his time at Luleå University of Technology, Mattias Lindahl will be attached to the research group in Engineering Materials but also work closely with the university's investment in sustainable material use (Creaternity).
