The construction industry's needs of external work environment services
Today, many construction companies use the services of occupational health care to a very limited extent. At the same time, we know that the risks in the construction industry regarding both health and accidents are high.
The purpose of the project is to investigate the construction industry's need for external support regarding work environment, health and safety. But also to examine the range of services and skills that are currently offered to the construction industry by occupational health care, primary care and consulting companies. The project will also make visible the construction industry's specific need for health prevention measures.
Need for improved working environment
From 1968-1993 there was Bygghälsan, which was an occupational health service that developed knowledge and competence within the construction sector in particular. Through the activity, extensive data material was created which the industry used as a basis for making several important decisions regarding noise, stress, eczema and the use of asbestos. Today, occupational health care's competence regarding the needs of the construction industry is not as concentrated and broad. In addition, more players have entered the market as both primary care and various consulting companies offer different services and training in the same area, which overall means that construction companies often only buy a basic range of health examinations from occupational health care. As a result, a catch-22 situation has arisen where, as a consequence, occupational health care also does not develop specific competence for the needs of the construction industry, because it is not in demand. The challenges will be several partly in view of the industry's known need for improved work environment, health and safety work, partly in view of a more differentiated and unclear picture of the range of services that can meet the construction industry's needs in these areas.
The research project is financed by AFA Försäkring and SBUF (Svenska Byggbranschens Utvecklingsfond) and runs from 2015-2019. Project leader is Leif Berglund, senior lecturer in Human Work Science.
