Stormwater runoff from railway infrastructure – pollutant management (2021-2022)
When planning road and rail infrastructure, the transport of pollutants via stormwater and the impact on receiving water bodies needs to be described. For road infrastructure, there is extensive evidence and methods to assess flows and pollutant loads.
These have been developed through former research while current research is ongoing. For rail infrastructure, there is limited knowledge and experience in Sweden on the amount of pollutants transported by rain from rail infrastructure to the surrounding area. The main objective of this project is to summarise current national and international knowledge in order to provide the Swedish Transport Administration with a better basis for responding to current and future environmental requirements in the planning of railway infrastructure.
