Student nurses' learning and development of clinical competence during placement - in relation to the nursing process.
The overall aim of the project is to investigate and describe the nursing process as a support in learning to promote the development of clinical competence in nursing students during the placement.
For nursing students, clinical placements are an extensive and important part of their education. During the placement, nursing students should develop their ability to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in order to develop clinical competence. The nurse's clinical competence is directly related to patient safety. The nursing process is a problem-solving model that the nurse uses to assess, plan and implement good and safe care and nursing for patients and relatives in a structured way. According to defined goals for higher education and the Swedish Nurses' Association's description of competence for nurses, students should be able to apply the nursing process independently in the care and nursing of patients and relatives. In order to achieve these goals, nursing students must be given the opportunity to develop critical thinking and independence in all stages of the nursing process. In order to achieve a sufficient degree of clinical competence, conditions are required for a good learning environment and organization of supervision that supports students' learning and development towards the profession as newly graduated nurses.
By studying how nursing students use the nursing process as a support for learning, we can gain knowledge about obstacles and opportunities for learning that promotes the development of clinical competence and thus contributes to good and safe care for patients and relatives.
